I rented a tiny room in an old house with three other people, ate whatever was cheapest at the grocery store, and carefully calculated whether I could afford transportation to a job interview.

But I was young.

And I was convinced that if I worked hard enough, something would eventually open up.

Then I found an opportunity at a small farm outside the city.

The owner seemed friendly during our first conversation. He told me he needed someone reliable and hardworking.

Instead of formally hiring me, he suggested that I come work for two days.

“Think of it as a trial,” he said. “If we’re a good fit, we’ll hire you. If not, we’ll still pay you for the two days.”

I agreed immediately.

At that point, I would have agreed to almost anything legitimate that put money in my pocket.

The problem was getting there.

The farm was about an hour away by bus, but even the bus fare felt like money I couldn’t spare. So I decided to walk.

Every morning, I left my room before sunrise.

I walked for an hour along the side of the road, arrived at the farm, worked all day, and then walked another hour home.

I was exhausted.

But I didn’t complain.

I cleaned equipment, carried supplies, helped with animals, repaired fencing, loaded deliveries, and did whatever they asked.

I wanted the job.

More importantly, I wanted to prove that I deserved the job.

At the end of the second day, the owner called me over.

I remember standing there, dirty and tired, expecting him to say something like, “You’ve done well. When can you start?”

Instead, he sighed.

“I don’t think it’s going to work out.”

I nodded.

I was disappointed, but I understood. Not every job is the right fit.

Then I asked about the payment.

That’s when his expression changed.

“I know we said we’d pay you,” he said, “but it’s just too complicated to set someone up for payroll for only two days.”

I thought he was joking.

He wasn’t.

“So…” I said, “what happens to the payment we agreed on?”

He shrugged.

“You’ll just have to be happy you got the experience.”

I stood there in silence.

Two full days.

Sixteen hours of work.

Two hours of walking every day because I couldn’t afford the bus.

And now I was being told that my rent money, grocery money, and everything else I desperately needed was being replaced with “experience.”

I wanted to argue.

I wanted to tell him exactly what I thought of him.

But I was young, new to the city, and terrified that somehow I would damage my chances of finding another job.

So I simply said, “Okay.”

Then I walked home.

For the first few blocks, I was furious.

By the time I reached my neighborhood, I was exhausted.

And by the time I reached my tiny room, I was crying.

Not because of the money alone.

It was because I had believed that working hard meant something.

That if you showed up, kept your word, and did your best, people would at least keep their word too.

That night, I opened my wallet.

There were a few dollars inside.

I counted them twice.

Then I made myself a very simple dinner and wrote down a promise in an old notebook:

“Never forget how this feels.”

The next morning, I started looking for another job.

I eventually found one.

Then another.

Years passed.

I built a career.

I moved into better apartments.

Eventually, I bought a small home.

I became the kind of person who could finally stop checking my bank account before buying groceries.

But I never forgot the farm.

Not because I wanted revenge.

I simply remembered the lesson.

A few years later, I started managing people myself.

Whenever someone worked hard for me, I made sure they were paid fairly.

If someone stayed late, I noticed.

If someone was struggling, I tried to help.

And whenever a young employee told me they were trying to get their life started, I remembered the person I used to be.

Then, about ten years after that farm experience, I received an email.

It was from the same farm owner.

I recognized his name immediately.

The message was surprisingly friendly.

He said his farm had grown considerably and that he was looking for someone with experience to help manage part of the operation.

He had heard about my career.

He had heard that I had become successful.

And he wanted to know if I would be interested in joining his company.

I stared at the email for several minutes.

Then I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because life has a strange sense of timing.

The man who once told me to be grateful for unpaid work was now offering me a professional position.

I could have ignored him.

Instead, I replied.

I thanked him for reaching out and told him I would be happy to discuss the position.

We arranged a meeting.

When I arrived, he didn’t recognize me at first.

Then I introduced myself.

His face changed.

“You…”

“Yes,” I said.

He remembered.

There was an awkward silence.

Finally, he said, “I owe you an apology.”

I didn’t say anything.

He continued.

“I remember those two days. I remember what happened. I was wrong.”

Then he told me something I hadn’t expected.

He said that after I left, several other young people had come to work for him.

Some stayed only a few weeks.

Some quit after being treated poorly.

Eventually, he realized that his attitude toward employees had cost him good workers and damaged the reputation of his business.

“I’ve thought about you more than once,” he admitted. “Especially because you were willing to walk an hour each way just to get there.”

I smiled slightly.

“I didn’t have money for the bus.”

He looked down.

“I know.”

We discussed the position.

It was a good opportunity.

But I declined.

Not angrily.

Not dramatically.

I simply told him that I had built something elsewhere and didn’t want to leave it.

Before I left, though, I told him something I had wished someone had told me when I was twenty-two.

“People remember how you treat them when they have nothing.”

He nodded.

I shook his hand and walked away.

I never got the two days’ pay.

But strangely enough, I eventually realized he had given me something more valuable.

He had taught me exactly what kind of employer I never wanted to become.

Today, whenever I hire someone young and inexperienced, I think about that long walk.

I remember the empty wallet.

I remember the exhaustion.

And I remember being told to be grateful for “experience.”

So I pay people.

On time.

Every time.

Because experience doesn’t pay the rent.

And someone’s hard work should never be treated as worthless simply because they’re desperate enough to accept the opportunity.

Sometimes the best revenge isn’t making someone regret what they did.

Sometimes it’s becoming successful without becoming like them.

He Said I Should Be Grateful for the “Experience” — Years Later, He Came Looking for Me When I was in my early twenties, I moved to a new …

[13

post-10661","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-new-post
["GET
