Every year on my birthday, I set the table for three.

Me.

My husband.

And Karen.

Her chair always stayed empty.

But I never stopped putting it there.

Karen was my only daughter.

She was twenty-two when she disappeared from my life.

And for twenty-five years, I had believed she wanted nothing to do with me.

It started after my divorce from her father.

Karen blamed me.

She believed I had destroyed our family.

She refused to listen when I tried to explain.

At first, she still called occasionally.

Then the calls stopped.

The letters came back unopened.

Her phone number changed.

Years passed.

I searched for her everywhere I could.

Nothing.

My ex-husband was no help.

Whenever I asked about Karen, he would simply say:

“She doesn’t want to see you.”

So I tried to respect what I thought was my daughter’s choice.

But every birthday, I set her place at the table anyway.

Just in case.

This year, I turned forty-seven.

I stared at Karen’s empty chair for almost an hour.

Something inside me finally broke.

I couldn’t live with the unanswered questions anymore.

I drove to my ex-husband’s house.

When he opened the door, my stomach dropped.

He looked exhausted.

Older than I remembered.

His face had the expression of a man who had been carrying something heavy for far too long.

“Where’s Karen?” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Where is my daughter?”

He stepped aside.

“Come in.”

I followed him into the living room.

Then I turned toward him.

“Tell me where she is.”

He stared at the floor.

Finally, he whispered:

“Oh God… don’t you know?”

My heart began pounding.

“Know what?”

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

Then he said five words that made my blood run cold.

“Your daughter is still alive.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?”

“She never left because she hated you.”

My hands started shaking.

“What are you talking about?”

He sat down.

“I lied to you.”

I felt the room spinning.

“For twenty-five years,” he continued, “I told you Karen didn’t want you.”

“Why?”

He covered his face with his hands.

“Because she found out something about the divorce.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

He looked up.

“Karen discovered that I had been having an affair.”

My stomach dropped.

“She found out before you did. She was the one who confronted me.”

I remembered that time.

The sudden anger.

Karen screaming at me.

Her telling me I had ruined everything.

Her refusing to hear my explanation.

I had always believed she thought I was the one who had cheated.

But that wasn’t the worst of it.

My ex-husband continued.

“I told her that if she told you the truth, I would make sure you never saw her again.”

I stared at him in disbelief.

“You threatened our daughter?”

He nodded.

“She was twenty-two. She was terrified. She thought she was protecting both of us.”

Then he told me the part that broke my heart.

Karen had tried to contact me.

Repeatedly.

Letters.

Emails.

Phone calls.

Every time, he intercepted them.

He told her I didn’t want to hear from her.

He told me she didn’t want me.

For twenty-five years, we had both been living inside the same lie.

I whispered:

“Where is she now?”

He hesitated.

Then he reached into a drawer and pulled out an envelope.

My name was written on it.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Karen had written it three years earlier.

It began:

“Mom, I don’t know if you’ll ever read this.”

I had to stop several times because my eyes filled with tears.

She wrote that she had never stopped loving me.

She wrote that she had spent years believing I had chosen to abandon her.

Then, eventually, she discovered the truth.

Her father had lied.

She had been searching for me ever since.

At the bottom of the letter was an address.

A small town several hours away.

I looked at my ex-husband.

“Why didn’t you give me this?”

He started crying.

“Because I was ashamed.”

I stood up.

“You should be.”

Then I walked out.

I drove for hours.

I was terrified.

What if she didn’t want to see me?

What if twenty-five years had changed too much?

What if I was too late?

When I finally reached the address, I saw a small white house.

I stood outside for several minutes before knocking.

The door opened.

A woman stood there.

She was older.

Her hair was different.

Her face had changed.

But her eyes hadn’t.

I knew immediately.

“Karen?”

She froze.

Neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered:

“Mom?”

I started crying.

So did she.

She stepped forward.

For a second, we simply stared at each other.

Then she ran into my arms.

I held my daughter like she was still twenty-two.

Like the years between us had never happened.

“I thought you hated me,” I cried.

“I thought you didn’t want me,” she answered.

We both laughed through our tears.

Twenty-five years.

Lost because of a lie.

We spent the entire afternoon talking.

She showed me photographs.

Her wedding.

Her children.

Her life.

A life I should have been part of.

I apologized for the years I had missed.

She apologized for believing the lie.

But neither of us blamed the other.

We had both been victims of the same deception.

Before I left, Karen asked:

“Do you still set the table for three?”

I smiled through my tears.

“Every birthday.”

She laughed.

“Then next year, Mom…”

She paused.

“Set it for four.”

I looked at her.

“Four?”

She smiled.

“My husband and I are coming.”

That night, I went home and looked at the empty chair I had kept for twenty-five years.

For the first time, I didn’t feel sadness.

I felt hope.

And on my next birthday, I set the table again.

But this time, Karen’s chair wasn’t empty.

After twenty-five years of waiting, my daughter finally came home.

“Your Daughter Is Still Alive…” Every year on my birthday, I set the table for three.
