My husband mocked a young mother in a grocery store when she quietly begged us for help buying formula for her newborn.

She was twenty-three, trembling as she held her tiny baby wrapped in a thin blanket.

My husband rolled his eyes.

“Maybe learn control before asking strangers for money.”

The young woman lowered her eyes.

I felt embarrassed for him.

I opened my wallet and handed her $325.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Thank you,” she whispered. “You don’t know what this means.”

My husband laughed as we walked toward our $68,000 SUV.

“You’re too soft.”

I didn’t answer.

I tried to forget about the whole thing.

Six weeks later, we were leaving another grocery store when I saw her again.

Except this time, she wasn’t asking anyone for help.

She walked directly toward us.

The baby was in a stroller.

She was dressed neatly, holding a sealed envelope.

My husband saw her.

His entire expression changed.

He stopped walking.

The color drained from his face.

I looked at him.

“What is it?”

He didn’t answer.

The woman stopped in front of us.

She looked at me first.

Then at my husband.

She held out the envelope.

“You need to know what your husband did.”

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

My husband finally spoke.

“Don’t.”

The woman looked at him.

“You told me never to contact you again.”

I turned toward my husband.

“Contact him?”

She nodded.

Then she opened the envelope.

Inside was a copy of an email.

I read it.

It was from my husband.

Six weeks earlier.

The woman explained that she hadn’t been asking strangers for money because she was careless.

Her baby had been born prematurely.

She had been working two jobs before giving birth, but her employer had fired her after she missed shifts for her baby’s medical appointments.

She had applied for assistance.

She was waiting for approval.

That day at the grocery store, she had been short exactly $325 for formula and medication.

But there was something else.

Before she approached us, she had called a local charity.

The charity had told her that a private donor might be able to help.

That donor was my husband.

I looked at him.

“What?”

He looked away.

The woman continued.

“Your husband contacted the charity two weeks before I met you.”

She handed me another paper.

It showed that he had promised to cover six months of my baby’s expenses.

But there was a condition.

I stared at him.

“What condition?”

The woman swallowed.

“He wanted me to sign an agreement saying I could never tell you.”

My stomach dropped.

My husband finally spoke.

“I was trying to help her.”

“Then why hide it?”

He didn’t answer.

The woman continued.

“After he saw me at the grocery store, he told me he had changed his mind.
