White enamel, yellowed around the edges, with a dent in the freezer door and a handle that had been replaced with a piece of black electrical tape. But it worked.

More importantly, that refrigerator had been there almost as long as I had known Al.

Twenty years.

Every Saturday morning, sometime around ten, one of us would wander over to the other’s garage. We’d work on cars, argue about football, complain about our wives—when they were still around to complain about—and drink a couple of beers from that refrigerator.

Al called it “the coldest fridge in Michigan.”

He was probably right.

When he was loading the last of his tools onto a trailer, I asked what he wanted for the refrigerator.

“Twenty bucks.”

“Twenty?”

“Take it, Den. Still runs cold as anything.”

So I handed him a twenty, and we wrestled that old thing into the back of my pickup.

If I’d known what was inside it, I don’t know whether I’d have taken it.

Maybe I would have.

I’m still not sure.

I hauled it home to my garage here in Escanaba and shoved it into the corner.

The next morning, I decided to clean behind it.

I pulled it away from the wall, and twenty years of dust came rolling out from underneath it. There were dead spiders, bits of leaves, a rusted socket wrench, and a bottle cap I’d apparently been looking for since 2009.

I laughed to myself.

Then I tipped the refrigerator slightly to sweep underneath.

Something moved.

Not inside the freezer.

Not inside the refrigerator compartment.

Behind it.

Deep inside the rear housing where the compressor and coils were.

I heard a heavy sliding sound.

Clunk.

I froze.

I tipped it again.

Clunk.

Something was definitely loose back there.

I figured a bracket or piece of metal had broken loose.

Normally I would’ve ignored it.

But I’d paid twenty dollars for the thing, and Al would’ve killed me if I ruined a perfectly good appliance.

So I grabbed a screwdriver.

The back panel was held on with four bolts.

I removed them.

The panel came away with a puff of dust.

I leaned closer and shined my flashlight inside.

That’s when I saw the rag.

It was tucked behind the compressor, wedged into a narrow space where nobody would notice it unless they were specifically looking.

An old gray shop rag.

I reached in and pulled it free.

Something heavy was wrapped inside.

I carried it over to my workbench.

For some reason, my hands were shaking.

I unfolded the rag.

Inside was a small metal box.

Not a toolbox.

Not a safe.

A box about the size of a paperback book, made from dull gray steel.

There was no lock.

Just a little latch.

I opened it.

And I had to sit down on the same stool I’d sat on with Al for twenty years of Saturdays.

Because inside that box was a photograph.

And beneath the photograph was a stack of envelopes.

The photograph was old.

Very old.

It showed two young men standing beside a car.

One was Al.

The other was my father.

I hadn’t seen that photograph in my entire life.

My father had died when I was nineteen.

He and Al had never been close.

At least, that’s what I’d always believed.

I turned the photograph over.

There was handwriting on the back.

My father’s handwriting.

I knew it immediately.

“Al—If anything happens to me, don’t let Dennis know until he’s ready.”

I stared at those words for so long that the garage seemed to disappear around me.

Dennis.

Me.

I opened the first envelope.

There was a letter inside.

It was dated thirty-two years earlier.

“Al,” it began.

“I’m running out of time, and I don’t know how to tell my boy.”

I stopped reading.

My father had never talked about dying.

Not once.

He’d been the kind of man who believed doctors were for people who didn’t know how to tough things out.

But the letter went on.

He had been diagnosed with a serious illness.

He knew he wouldn’t have much time.

And he had one fear.

Not dying.

Leaving me alone.

I read the entire letter.

Then I opened another.

Then another.

There were twelve letters in all.

My father had written them over the last year of his life.

Some were about me.

Some were about my mother.

Some were about the things he wished he’d taught me.

But one letter explained the refrigerator.

“I’m putting these with the old fridge because nobody would ever think to look there. If Dennis ever finds them, it means he’s old enough to understand.”

I laughed.

Then I started crying.

My father had always called me “Dennis” when he was serious.

Never “Den.”

Only Al called me Den.

I picked up the final envelope.

On the front, my father had written:

FOR DENNIS — WHEN HE HAS HIS OWN GRAY HAIR

I opened it.

There were only two pages.

“Son,” it began.

“If you’re reading this, then you’ve lived long enough to become the age I was when I wrote it.”

I stopped.

I looked at my hands.

Gray hair.

Wrinkled knuckles.

Forty years of work behind me.

I kept reading.

“That means something I couldn’t imagine when I was your age.
