Not a tool case.

A lockbox.

It was about the size of a paperback book, painted the same dull white as the freezer, and somebody had wedged it into a narrow space beneath the basket before fastening it down with that wire.

My first thought was that I’d just bought myself somebody else’s problem.

My second was that I should put the wire back, close the freezer, and forget I’d ever seen it.

But curiosity is a stubborn thing.

I picked up the box.

It was heavier than it looked.

There was no lock on it anymore. Just a little latch that opened when I lifted it.

Inside was a bundle of envelopes tied together with faded twine.

The first envelope had a date written across it.

October 1987.

Underneath that, in shaky handwriting:

For David. According to the letters, he’d gotten mixed up with a man named Walter in the late eighties. Walter apparently owed Frank money—quite a lot of it.

The letters didn’t say exactly what the money was for.

But they mentioned hunting trips.

Drugs.

Stolen equipment.

And once, in a letter from Frank to his brother:

I found what Walter did. I can’t let David know. He’s too young.

I stopped reading.

Because suddenly I understood why the freezer had been wired shut.

It wasn’t because somebody was trying to keep food from falling out.

Somebody had wanted to make absolutely certain that nobody casually lifted that basket.

I kept going.

The next envelope contained newspaper clippings.

One was about a man named Walter Harris who had disappeared in 1991.

Another was about a missing woman.

Her name was Marianne Bell.

The article said she had been twenty-four years old.

She had disappeared after leaving work one evening.

No body was ever found.

I read that sentence three times.

Then I found a handwritten note.

Walter didn’t kill Marianne. Frank did.

I dropped the paper.

For a few minutes, I just sat there listening to the freezer hum.

I thought about calling the police.

Then I thought about calling my sister.

Instead, I picked up the phone and called the number on the estate-sale flyer.

A woman answered.

“Hello?”

I said, “I’m sorry to bother you, but I bought Frank’s freezer today.”

Silence.

Then she said, “Who is this?”

I told her.

Another silence.

Longer this time.

Finally she said, “Did you open it?”

My mouth went dry.

“Open what?”

She exhaled.

“The box.”

I didn’t answer.

She said, very quietly, “Then you found it.”

I asked who she was.

She said her name was Linda.

She was Frank’s daughter.

David’s sister.

And she had been trying for twenty years to get her brother to look inside that freezer.

“He wouldn’t,” she said. “He didn’t want to believe what Dad was capable of.”

“What’s in the box?”

“You already know.”

“No,” I said. “I don’t.”

She went quiet again.

Then she said, “There’s one more envelope.”

I looked down.

There was.

I’d missed it because it had slipped underneath the others.

It wasn’t addressed to David.

It said:

For whoever finds this.

My hands started shaking.

I opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Frank had written it himself.

He confessed that Marianne had discovered he and Walter were using his shop to store stolen goods.

She threatened to tell the police.

Frank confronted her.

He claimed he never intended to hurt her.

But he did.

The rest of the confession was short.

He wrote that he had hidden her body beneath the old workshop floor.

Walter had found out.

That’s why Walter disappeared.

Frank had killed him too.

Then came the final line.

The freezer isn’t where I hid them. It’s where I hid the truth.

I stared at those words.

Then I noticed something else.

The letter was dated only three months before Frank died.

That meant he hadn’t forgotten.

He’d been carrying the secret all those years.

I called the police.

Two officers came to my house that evening.

Then detectives.

Then more people.

They took the box, the photographs, the letters, everything.

One detective asked me where I’d bought the freezer.

I told him.

“Who sold it to you?”

“David.”

The detective exchanged a look with his partner.

“David Bell?”

“Yes.”

He nodded slowly.

“We’ve been trying to reach him.”

“Why?”

The detective looked at me.

“Because yesterday morning, before the estate sale, David came to the station.”

My heart dropped.

“What did he want?”

“He told us he believed his father had murdered two people.”

I looked toward the garage.

The freezer was still there, unplugged now.

The detective continued.

“He said his father left him a message before he died. Told him there was something hidden in the freezer. David said he couldn’t bring himself to open it.”

“Then why sell it?”

The detective didn’t answer immediately.

Finally he said, “He was hoping somebody else would.”

That explained the hovering.

The repeated warning that it worked.

The way he’d kept looking at me.

He hadn’t been trying to get rid of an old freezer.

He’d been trying to get rid of a secret he couldn’t bear to touch.

Three days later, investigators dug beneath the old workshop.

They found human remains.

Two sets.

Marianne Bell and Walter Harris.

The case made the news.

David gave a statement.

Linda gave another.

And Frank’s confession became the piece that finally connected everything.

A month later, David came to my house.

He stood at the garage entrance for a long time.

“I owe you,” he said.

I shook my head.

“You don’t owe me anything.”

He looked at the freezer.

“Twenty-five dollars.”

I laughed.

“That’s what you want to give me?”

He smiled for the first time.

“No.”

He pulled an envelope from his jacket.

Inside was my twenty-five dollars.

And another twenty-five.

“I sold you that thing for twenty-five,” he said. “I think you earned your money back.”

I tried to refuse.

He wouldn’t let me.

Before he left, he turned around.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

“Why did you open the box?”

I thought about it.

Then I told him the truth.

“Because somebody went through a lot of trouble to make sure nobody did.”

He nodded.

Then he said something I’ll never forget.

“My dad spent thirty years trying to bury the truth.”

He looked back at the freezer.

“And somehow, it ended up in your garage.”

I never used that freezer again.

I gave it to the police after they finished with it.

They didn’t want it at first.

Then one detective came back and asked if I’d mind donating it to the department.

I said they could have it.

He laughed.

“Honestly, ma’am, after what we’ve found, I don’t think anybody wants to plug that thing in.”

Neither did I.

To this day, my husband jokes that the best twenty-five-dollar purchase I ever made was the one I didn’t actually need.

Maybe he’s right.

Because I went to that estate sale looking for a crockpot.

I came home with a freezer.

And inside that freezer was a secret somebody had spent nearly forty years trying to keep cold.

The Freezer at the Estate Sale I sat right down on that garage floor next to it.
