Room for our daughter to run when she got older. Room to breathe.

The property had been neglected for years, but we didn’t mind. The house needed work, the fence needed repairing, and there were weeds everywhere.

Out near the far edge of the property stood an old hand-dug well.

It was boarded over with two warped pieces of plywood and a rusted sheet of tin.

The previous owner had told me it had been dry for decades.

“Don’t worry about it,” he’d said. “It’s just an old well.”

But with a toddler in the house, I didn’t like the idea of a deep hole sitting fifty yards from where she played.

So one Saturday morning, I decided to clean it out and fill it in.

Just another chore.

I pulled the boards away.

A cloud of dust came up.

I shined my flashlight down.

The well was exactly what I’d expected.

Dry.

Deep.

Lined with old stones darkened by age.

There were bottles at the bottom, a rusted bucket, pieces of wood, and all the usual junk people apparently throw into abandoned wells.

I figured I’d climb down, clear out the loose debris, then we’d bring in several loads of dirt.

I tied a rope around a heavy post, lowered a ladder, and climbed down.

The first fifteen feet were boring.

Dust.

Cobwebs.

Old bottles.

Nothing unusual.

Then my flashlight caught something on the wall.

I stopped.

At first I thought it was a piece of cloth caught between two stones.

I moved closer.

It wasn’t.

It was a bundle.

Someone had wrapped something tightly in a faded canvas material and tied it directly to the stonework.

Not thrown in.

Not wedged accidentally.

Tied.

Someone had deliberately climbed down into this well and secured it to the wall.

And it wasn’t near the top.

It was maybe fifteen feet below ground.

I stared at it.

My first thought was that it might be an old tool or some piece of farm equipment.

Then I noticed the rope.

It wasn’t ordinary twine.

It was thick, yellowed, and badly weathered.

The knot looked old.

Very old.

I climbed down another few feet.

My flashlight beam moved over the bundle.

There was something underneath the canvas.

Something shaped like a long narrow box.

My stomach tightened.

I reached toward it.

Then I saw the little metal tag.

It was attached to the canvas with a piece of wire.

Three numbers had been scratched into it.

17-6-4.

I didn’t know what they meant.

I didn’t touch the bundle.

Instead, I climbed back up.

Fast.

By the time I reached the surface, my hands were shaking.

My wife came outside.

“What’s wrong?”

“There’s something down there.”

“What kind of something?”

“I don’t know.”

She looked over the edge.

“Did you find an animal?”

“No.”

“What, then?”

I looked back toward the house.

Our daughter was playing with a plastic watering can on the patio.

“Get her inside.”

My wife immediately understood from my voice that I wasn’t joking.

She picked up our daughter and went inside.

I called the sheriff’s office.

A deputy arrived about forty minutes later.

I explained what I’d found.

He climbed down far enough to see the bundle.

When he came back up, he didn’t say much.

He simply asked me one question.

“Did you open it?”

“No.”

“Good.”

He called someone.

Then another vehicle arrived.

An older detective stepped out.

He looked down the well.

Then he looked at me.

“How long have you owned this property?”

“Three months.”

“Did you know anything about the previous owners?”

“Not really.”

He nodded.

“Stay away from that well.”

They brought equipment.

The bundle was carefully removed.

The detective opened it on the ground.

There was a long silence.

Inside was a child’s shoe.

A small red sneaker.

Then another.

Then a faded blue backpack.

My wife covered her mouth.

I felt cold all over.

The detective continued unwrapping the canvas.

Inside the backpack were several things.

A plastic comb.

A broken pair of glasses.

A library card.

And a photograph.

The photograph was badly damaged, but the face was still recognizable.

A little boy.

Maybe nine or ten years old.

The detective stared at it.

Then he pulled out his phone.

“Give me a minute.”

He walked away.

When he returned, his expression had changed.

“This child disappeared twenty-seven years ago.”

I couldn’t speak.

“His name was Matthew Carter.”

The detective showed us an old missing-person photograph.

Same face.

Same eyes.

Same crooked smile.

Matthew had vanished from a nearby farming community in 1999.

His parents had spent years searching.

There had been flyers.

Search parties.

Television interviews.

The case eventually went cold.

But the detective wasn’t finished.

He pointed at the metal tag.

“Those numbers.”

“17-6-4?”

He nodded.

“They’re not a date.”

He pulled out an old case file.

“The original investigator wrote down three property survey markers from the area.”

My stomach dropped.

“You’re saying someone put this here back then?”

“Looks that way.”

“But why tie it to the wall?”

The detective looked down into the well.

“Because whoever put it there didn’t want it found.”

That night, nobody slept much.

The next morning, investigators returned with ground-penetrating equipment.

They searched the area around the well.

They found nothing.

Then one investigator noticed something strange.

The stones inside the well had been repaired.

Not recently.

Decades ago.

Several stones had been removed and replaced with newer ones.

They took those stones apart.

Behind them was a narrow cavity.

Inside was a small metal ammunition box.

The detective opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Newspaper clippings.

And a handwritten notebook.

The notebook belonged to the man who had owned the property before us.

But the dates were from twenty-seven years earlier.

The detective read through it.

Apparently, the previous owner had suspected someone was using his property at night.

He had seen headlights near the well.

He’d investigated once.

Then he heard voices.

He never confronted anyone.

Instead, he watched from a distance.

One night, he saw two men carry something wrapped in canvas toward the well.

He had been too frightened to intervene.

But he had written down their truck’s license plate.

That license plate led investigators to a man who was still alive.

A retired contractor living in Arizona.

When police interviewed him, he denied everything.

Until they showed him the notebook.

Then he broke down.

He confessed.

Matthew had accidentally witnessed a burglary.

The two men involved panicked.

They abducted him.

They intended to frighten him into silence.

But something went wrong.

Matthew died that night.

Instead of reporting what happened, they hid his belongings and buried the truth.

One of the men had died years earlier.

The other was eventually charged.

But there was one question that stayed with me.

Why had the bundle been tied to the wall?

The detective explained it simply.

“The well wasn’t dry when they put it there.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“They lowered the bundle down while there was still water.”

The bundle had been secured above the waterline, inside a recessed section of the stone wall.

They thought the well would eventually fill enough to cover it.

But the water table dropped.

The well went dry.

And the bundle remained exactly where they’d left it.

Hidden in plain sight.

For nearly three decades.

A week later, Matthew’s parents came to our property.

They were old now.

Much older than the people in the photographs.

His mother stood beside the well for a long time.

She didn’t say anything.

Then she placed a small bouquet of flowers on the ground.

“I always knew he didn’t just run away,” she whispered.

His father put a hand on her shoulder.

Neither of them cried.

At least not while we were standing there.

Before they left, Matthew’s mother turned to me.

“You didn’t have to climb down there.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

She looked at the well.

“But you did.”

After the investigation was over, we filled the well.

Layer by layer.

Stone.

Gravel.

Dirt.

Then more dirt.

I made sure there wasn’t even a depression left where it had been.

My daughter never knew what happened there.

To her, that part of the property is just a patch of grass where she likes to chase butterflies.

Sometimes, though, when I walk past that spot, I think about the thing tied to the wall.

Not the shoes.

Not the backpack.

Not even the terrible story behind them.

I think about the person who tied that bundle there.

He had to climb down into that darkness.

He had to secure it by hand.

He had to climb back out.

And every time he walked away from that well for the next twenty-seven years, he knew exactly what he’d left behind.

Some secrets disappear because nobody looks for them.

Others survive because somebody, someday, decides to do one ordinary chore.

I thought I was filling in an old well.

Instead, I opened one.

And after twenty-seven years, someone finally got to bring a little boy home.

The Thing Tied to the Well Wall We bought a few acres outside Lubbock because we wanted room.
