It was Walt. And he was sitting at a table with another young man who had the exact same jaw, the same eyes. Brothers. You couldn’t miss it.

I looked up at the woman, and she had tears already standing in her eyes, and she said, “The one on the left is my brother Danny. The one on the right is Walt. This was taken the week before Danny died. Nineteen sixty-nine.”

She told me the whole of it, sitting at my bar, both of us letting our drinks go warm the way Walt always let his.

Walt and Danny weren’t blood brothers — they were closer than that. Grew up two houses apart in Casper, went to war together, came home together. Except Danny didn’t really come all the way home. He died young, a few years after, the way a lot of those boys did, carrying things nobody had a word for yet. And Walt made him a promise at the graveside that he never once, in fifty years, mentioned to a living soul. Not even to me.

Every Friday at six, Walt and Danny used to meet at this tavern. Same table. Two beers. That was the whole tradition, going back to when they were boys with fake IDs.

So when Danny was gone, Walt just kept the standing order. Came in every Friday at six. Bought two. Set one across from himself, in front of the empty chair, for the brother who couldn’t make it. Nursed his own slow so Danny wouldn’t be drinking alone. And left the second one full, because it was never his to drink. Fifteen years I watched him do it in my bar, and God knows how many years before mine. “He knows,” Walt told me, the one time I asked. And he did. Wherever Danny was, he knew somebody still showed up on Fridays.

“Last Friday he didn’t come,” I said, and the woman just nodded, and I already knew, but she said it anyway.

Walt passed last week. In his sleep, peaceful, eighty-one years old. She’s Danny’s little sister — she was a girl in 1969, the tag-along. Going through the family things, she’d found an old letter of Danny’s, and a note in Walt’s hand clipped to it that said where he’d be every Friday for the rest of his life, and why. She drove two states to find the bar. To find me. To see the empty chair.

So I did the only thing there was to do.

I pulled two drafts. Set them on Walt’s table, one across from the other, in front of two empty chairs now instead of one. We let them sit. We didn’t drink them. Some beers were never ours to drink.

The regulars figured out what was happening without a word from me — you tend bar twenty years, your regulars can read a room. One by one they stood, and lifted whatever they were holding, toward a table with two full glasses going warm and nobody sitting there. For two men most of them only half-knew, who’d been keeping a Friday appointment with each other since Nixon was in office.

I leave that table open on Fridays now. Somebody asked me last week why the good table by the window never fills up at six. I told them it’s reserved. It is. Two boys from Casper have a standing order, going on sixty years, and I don’t intend to be the bartender who finally clears it.

…because the man in that photograph was young — early twenties, maybe — but I’d have known that face anywhere, from a thousand Friday nights.
