My friend Claire had been talking about the new steakhouse downtown for weeks.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s supposed to be incredible,\u201d she told me one Friday afternoon. \u201cThe steaks are amazing. We have to go.\u201d<\/p>\n
I hesitated.<\/p>\n
Claire knew my situation. I had been trying to keep my spending under control after a few unexpected expenses. Rent had gone up, groceries were getting more expensive, and I was carefully watching every dollar until my next paycheck.<\/p>\n

That evening, we walked into the steakhouse, and immediately I realized this wasn’t an ordinary restaurant.<\/p>\n
The lighting was soft and golden. Crystal glasses covered every table. The menus didn’t list prices next to some of the chef’s specials.<\/p>\n
A man at the table beside us was wearing a watch that probably cost more than my car.<\/p>\n

Another nod.<\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n
Then came the cocktails.<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo of those,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
I quietly looked down at my menu.<\/p>\n
\u201cI’ll just have the house salad,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd tap water, please.\u201d<\/p>\n
Claire didn’t even look embarrassed.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe’s not very hungry,\u201d she told the waiter.<\/p>\n
The waiter smiled politely and walked away.<\/p>\n
I tried not to think about the bill.<\/p>\n
Maybe Claire really intended to pay for herself.<\/p>\n

Claire’s steak looked enormous. The lobster tail was sitting beside it, covered in butter. Her three side dishes filled the table.<\/p>\n

For most of dinner, she talked about vacations, shopping, and a new handbag she wanted.<\/p>\n

I assumed she meant we’d share it.<\/p>\n
We didn’t.<\/p>\n
She ate nearly all of it herself.<\/p>\n
Finally, the waiter cleared the table.<\/p>\n
Claire leaned back in her chair, satisfied.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then the waiter returned with the bill.<\/p>\n
