Honestly, I’m not even sure what I’m supposed to do now.

It started with me taking a bath.

I had the bathroom door mostly closed, music playing softly from my phone, and for the first time all week, I was actually relaxing.

Then I heard the dogs barking.

That wasn’t unusual. My dachshund, Benny, barked at everything—the mail carrier, squirrels, delivery trucks, leaves blowing past the window.

I almost ignored it.

Then I heard a scream.

Not a frightened yell.

Not a kid complaining.

A blood-curdling scream.

A child’s scream.

I froze.

I turned off the water, jumped out of the bathtub, grabbed a towel, and ran downstairs.

“Benny!”

I could hear barking and growling coming from the living room.

When I reached the doorway, my heart nearly stopped.

There was a little girl on my living-room floor.

She looked about five or six years old.

And Benny had hold of her pants near her leg, pulling backward and barking furiously.

For one horrible second, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

Then I screamed.

“Benny! DROP IT!”

He released her immediately.

I rushed to the girl.

She was sobbing so hard she could barely breathe. Her face was covered in tears and mucus, and she had several wounds around her ankles and legs. There was blood on her skin and on her pants.

“Oh my God.”

I knelt beside her.

“Are you okay? Can you hear me?”

She nodded, but she was shaking violently.

“I’m sorry,” I kept saying. “I’m so sorry.”

I grabbed Benny by the collar and locked him in the laundry room.

Then I called emergency services.

While I waited, I tried to figure out who this child was.

“What’s your name?”

She whispered it.

I didn’t recognize it.

“Where’s your mommy?”

She pointed vaguely toward the front door.

“Home.”

“What house?”

She gave me an address.

It was only about a block away.

The strange thing was, I had never seen this child before.

I didn’t even know how she’d gotten inside my house.

My front door had been locked.

I hurriedly threw on some clothes, wrapped a clean towel around the worst of her wounds, and carried her outside.

She was so light.

Far too light.

She kept her arms around my neck and buried her face against my shoulder.

As I walked, she whispered something.

“What?”

She didn’t answer.

“Sweetheart, what did you say?”

She whispered again.

“Benny saved me.”

I stopped walking.

I looked down at her.

“What?”

She didn’t repeat it.

A minute later, we reached the house she’d described.

I knocked.

No answer.

I knocked again.

“Hello? Your daughter is hurt!”

Still nothing.

Then I noticed something.

The front door wasn’t locked.

It was slightly open.

I pushed it.

“Hello?”

Nothing.

The little girl suddenly tightened her arms around my neck.

“Mommy?”

No response.

I stepped inside.

The house was dark and strangely quiet.

There were toys scattered across the floor. A half-eaten bowl of cereal sat on the kitchen table. A television was playing cartoons in an empty room.

But there was no mother.

I called emergency services again and told them where we were.

Then I noticed something that made my stomach turn.

There was blood on the floor.

Not much.

Just a few small drops.

But they led from the hallway toward the kitchen.

The girl saw me looking.

“Mommy fell,” she whispered.

“What happened to your mom?”

She buried her face in my shoulder.

“She wouldn’t wake up.”

My blood ran cold.

The police and paramedics arrived minutes later.

They found the girl’s mother unconscious in the kitchen.

She was alive.

She had apparently collapsed after suffering a medical emergency.

The paramedics stabilized her and took her to the hospital.

But there was still one question nobody could answer.

How had the little girl gotten into my house?

The police asked her.

She wouldn’t say.

They asked me.

I had no idea.

Then one of the officers walked outside and examined my property.

He came back looking confused.

“Your back gate is open.”

“I never use that gate.”

He nodded.

“There are footprints.”

He showed me.

Tiny footprints in the mud.

They went from my back gate to my kitchen door.

The officer looked at Benny, who was still locked in the laundry room.

“Did your dog attack her when she came inside?”

“I don’t know.”

The little girl suddenly spoke.

“No.”

Everyone turned toward her.

“He didn’t attack me.”

I stared at her.

“He bit you.”

She shook her head.

“He was pulling me.”

“Pulling you where?”

She pointed toward the hallway.

“To the door.”

Nobody said anything.

The officer crouched down.

“What door?”

She pointed again.

“That one.”

I looked.

It was the door to my basement.

I’d lived in the house for nearly four years.

I’d barely ever used the basement.

There was nothing down there except storage boxes, an old water heater, and some Christmas decorations.

The officer opened it.

Benny started barking from the laundry room.

The little girl began crying again.

“I don’t want to go down there.”

The officer looked at me.

“Have you been down there recently?”

“No.”

He switched on the light.

Everything looked normal.

Then he walked down the stairs.

A few seconds later, he called up.

“Ma’am?”

“Yes?”

“You need to come see this.”

I didn’t want to.

But I followed.

At the bottom of the stairs was a small basement window.

It was open.

The screen had been pushed out.

And underneath the window was a child’s shoe.

The same kind of shoe the little girl was wearing.

Then we noticed the wall beneath the window.

There were scratches.

Fresh ones.

As though someone—or something—had been trying to climb through.

The officer looked at me.

“Someone came into your house through this window.”

I felt sick.

“But why?”

He didn’t answer.

Then he pointed at the floor.

There were muddy footprints.

Adult-sized.

They led from the window toward the stairs.

And then toward the kitchen.

Toward the little girl’s house.

The police immediately began treating the situation differently.

This wasn’t a child wandering into my house.

Someone had entered my basement.

The girl had apparently followed or encountered that person somehow.

And Benny had reacted.

The officer asked the little girl one more question.

“Did you see the person?”

She nodded.

“Who was it?”

She looked toward the basement window.

Then she whispered:

“Mommy’s friend.”

The room went silent.

Later that afternoon, detectives learned that the mother had recently been having problems with an acquaintance who had been coming around her house.

They eventually found the man several streets away.

He had scratches on his arms and mud on his shoes.

But the strangest part was what happened when they questioned him.

He admitted he’d been inside the mother’s house.

He admitted he’d been trying to take something.

But he insisted he had never entered my home.

The police didn’t believe him.

Neither did I.

Because Benny had been barking before I heard the child’s scream.

And the little girl kept insisting that Benny hadn’t been attacking her.

He’d been pulling her.

Pulling her away from the basement.

Away from the person who had entered through the window.

The little girl spent the night in the hospital with her mother.

Her injuries weren’t life-threatening.

My dog was examined by animal control, and fortunately, the wounds were determined to be superficial enough that Benny wasn’t classified as dangerous.

As for me?

I replaced every lock on the house.

I installed cameras.

I reinforced the basement window.

And I don’t take Benny for granted anymore.

Because for all the fear and confusion of that morning, I keep thinking about one thing.

When I first ran downstairs, I thought my dog was attacking a little girl.

I thought Benny had become dangerous.

But apparently, I’d misunderstood what I was seeing.

He wasn’t trying to hurt her.

He was trying to pull her away.

And if that little girl hadn’t followed Benny’s movements…

If I hadn’t heard her scream…

If I had stayed in the bathtub another five minutes…

I don’t even want to think about what might have happened.

That night, I sat on the living-room floor with Benny curled beside me.

I scratched behind his ears.

“You scared the hell out of me today, buddy.”

He looked at me, wagged his tail once, and put his head on my knee.

I don’t know if dogs understand when they’re being called heroes.

But I do know one thing.

I’ll never look at that little dachshund the same way again.

Because sometimes the dog you think you need to protect everyone from…

is the one protecting everyone else.

The Little Girl in My Living Room This just happened this morning, and I’m still a little rattled by it.
