We were already counting every dollar—rent, groceries, doctor’s appointments, diapers we hadn’t even bought yet.

The man selling the dryer seemed normal enough.

He helped Cody load it into our truck, told us it was old but reliable, and even joked that it had “probably got another ten years in it.”

We thanked him, paid him, and drove home.

And the dryer did work.

Mostly.

The first load we put through it was baby clothes. Tiny onesies, little socks, a blanket my mother had bought us.

About ten minutes into the cycle, we heard it.

Clunk.

The drum turned.

Clunk.

Again.

Cody looked at me.

“Something’s stuck in there.”

He stopped the dryer, unplugged it, and pulled it away from the wall.

We’re not exactly handy people.

But Cody is stubborn, and YouTube is free.

So he got down on the kitchen floor with a flashlight between his teeth and started removing the back panel.

“Probably a loose bolt,” he said.

Then he stopped.

“What?”

He didn’t answer.

I walked over.

Behind the drum, tucked beside the motor and belt assembly, was a small bundle wrapped tightly in an old rag.

Someone had wired it directly to the frame.

Not taped.

Not accidentally wedged there.

Wired.

Tight.

It was positioned in a hollow space that you couldn’t see unless you removed the back panel.

Cody stared at it for several seconds.

“Why would somebody put something in here?”

“I don’t know.”

He carefully cut the wire.

Then he carried the bundle to the kitchen table.

The rag was stained with oil and dust.

Underneath it was an old piece of black oilcloth.

Cody unwrapped it.

And I had to sit down.

Inside was a stack of photographs.

Dozens of them.

Old photographs.

Some were faded almost completely brown. Others were newer.

There were also handwritten envelopes, a small key, and a plastic evidence bag containing what looked like a wedding ring.

But it was the photographs that frightened me.

Because the first one showed a woman standing outside a house.

I recognized the house.

Not because I’d ever been there.

Because it was our house.

The little rental we had been living in for eight months.

Cody turned the photograph over.

There was a date written on the back.

“Three years ago.”

We stared at each other.

“That’s impossible,” I whispered.

Cody picked up another.

Same house.

Different season.

Another photograph showed our front porch at night.

Another showed our bedroom window.

Then we found one taken through the kitchen window.

Our kitchen.

The same kitchen where we were standing.

My stomach turned.

Someone had been watching our house long before we’d ever moved in.

Cody immediately locked the doors.

Then he called the police.

An officer arrived about twenty minutes later.

He examined everything on the table without touching it.

When he saw the photographs, his expression changed.

“Where did you get these?”

“We bought a dryer,” Cody said.

The officer looked confused.

“From whom?”

Cody showed him the Marketplace listing.

The officer took out his phone.

He studied the seller’s profile.

Then he looked at us.

“Do you know the previous tenants?”

“No.”

“Do you know who owned the house before your landlord?”

“No.”

He asked us to step away from the table.

The photographs were collected as evidence.

So were the envelopes, the key, and the ring.

Then the officer made a call.

A few minutes later, another detective arrived.

She studied the photographs for nearly ten minutes without saying anything.

Finally, she asked us a strange question.

“Have you noticed anyone around the house?”

I told her about the car.

A dark sedan I’d seen twice across the street.

I’d assumed it belonged to a neighbor.

The detective exchanged a glance with the officer.

Then she showed me a photograph from the bundle.

It was the same car.

Parked outside our house.

Three months earlier.

The detective explained that the house had been connected to a missing-person investigation several years ago.

A young woman named Mara Ellis had disappeared.

She had lived there with her boyfriend.

The case had never been solved.

The boyfriend had eventually moved away.

The house changed owners.

Then tenants came and went.

But the photographs suggested someone had continued watching the property.

The ring turned out to belong to Mara.

And one of the envelopes contained a letter written by her.

The final line made everyone in the room go silent.

“If anything happens to me, look where nobody thinks to look.”

The detective looked at the dryer.

For the first time, we understood why the bundle had been hidden there.

The dryer hadn’t belonged to the Marketplace seller.

It had belonged to Mara.

The seller had purchased it at an estate auction years earlier.

He hadn’t known what was inside.

But the detective believed someone else had.

Because the photographs weren’t simply memories.

They were documentation.

Someone had been collecting evidence.

And someone had hidden it where they believed nobody would ever search.

The investigation was reopened.

Two weeks later, detectives arrested Mara’s former boyfriend.

They found him after matching fingerprints from one of the envelopes to an old case file.

He had never left the area.

He had been living under a different name.

The strangest part came afterward.

The detective returned to our house with one final photograph.

It was taken only days before we bought the dryer.

It showed the dryer sitting in the seller’s garage.

And standing beside it was a man.

Not the Marketplace seller.

Someone else.

The detective said they were still trying to identify him.

We never learned who he was.

But we did learn one thing.

The sixty-dollar dryer hadn’t been junk.

It had been a hiding place.

And if that little rattle hadn’t started during our first load of baby clothes, we might never have discovered what was inside.

We eventually bought a new dryer.

We gave the sixty-dollar one to the police.

I still think about that old machine sometimes.

Because every time I hear something rattling inside an appliance, I remember what Cody said that night.

“People hide things where they think nobody will ever look.”

And sometimes, they’re wrong.
