<\/p>\n
We bought a used dryer for sixty bucks off a Marketplace ad.<\/p>\n
Ours had quit the week before, and with the baby coming, a new one simply wasn’t in the budget. We were already counting every dollar\u2014rent, groceries, doctor’s appointments, diapers we hadn’t even bought yet.<\/p>\n
The man selling the dryer seemed normal enough.<\/p>\n
He helped Cody load it into our truck, told us it was old but reliable, and even joked that it had “probably got another ten years in it.”<\/p>\n
We thanked him, paid him, and drove home.<\/p>\n
And the dryer did work.<\/p>\n

The first load we put through it was baby clothes. Tiny onesies, little socks, a blanket my mother had bought us.<\/p>\n

Others were newer.<\/p>\n There were also handwritten envelopes, a small key, and a plastic evidence bag containing what looked like a wedding ring.<\/p>\n But it was the photographs that frightened me.<\/p>\n Because the first one showed a woman standing outside a house.<\/p>\n I recognized the house.<\/p>\n Not because I’d ever been there.<\/p>\n Because it was our house<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The anything happens to me, look where nobody thinks to look.”<\/em><\/p>\n The detective looked at the dryer.<\/p>\n For the first time, we understood why the bundle had been hidden there.<\/p>\n The dryer hadn’t belonged to the Marketplace seller.<\/p>\n It had belonged to Mara.<\/p>\n The seller had purchased it at an estate auction years earlier.<\/p>\n He hadn’t known what was inside.<\/p>\n But the detective believed someone else had.<\/p>\n Because the photographs weren’t simply memories.<\/p>\n They were documentation.<\/p>\n Someone had been collecting evidence.<\/p>\n And someone had
