People stared through their windows. Someone pulled over, but everyone seemed frozen, unsure of what to do.<\/p>\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled my car over, grabbed my phone, and called 911.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s been a motorcycle accident,&#8221; I told the dispatcher. &#8220;The rider is badly injured. Please hurry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I climbed down the roadside embankment toward him.<\/p>\n<p>He was lying on the ground, shaken and bleeding, but conscious.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hey,&#8221; I said, kneeling beside him. &#8220;Don&#8217;t move. The ambulance is coming.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His eyes opened.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My bike&#8230;&#8221; he whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Despite everything, I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Forget your bike for now. You&#8217;re going to have to explain to me why you decided to go flying without wings.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He gave the faintest smile.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My name&#8217;s Joe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m glad to meet you, Joe. I&#8217;m the guy who&#8217;s going to annoy you until the ambulance gets here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He chuckled, then winced.<\/p>\n<p>I kept talking.<\/p>\n<p>I asked him where he lived. I asked about his family. I asked whether he had a wife.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yeah,&#8221; he said quietly. &#8220;Her name is Linda.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Good. Then you&#8217;ve got someone waiting for you. You&#8217;d better stick around.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He closed his eyes for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>I immediately squeezed his hand.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hey, Joe. Stay with me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His eyes opened again.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Good.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then, strangely enough, he looked toward his damaged motorcycle.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Think you could take some pictures?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Pictures?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the story later,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Nobody&#8217;s going to believe this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fine. But only if you promise to tell the story yourself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>A few minutes later, the sound of sirens filled the road.<\/p>\n<p>The paramedics arrived and carefully stabilized him before lifting him onto the stretcher.<\/p>\n<p>As they worked, a woman who had stopped nearby walked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Joe, then at me.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t believe you went down there,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I couldn&#8217;t just leave him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve helped someone like him before.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t sure what she meant.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at Joe again.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the South,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>I paused.<\/p>\n<p>Something about the way she said it made my stomach sink.<\/p>\n<p>She was talking about his race.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly, I understood what she was implying.<\/p>\n<p>I looked back at Joe lying on that stretcher.<\/p>\n<p>He wasn&#8217;t a race.<\/p>\n<p>He wasn&#8217;t a political opinion.<\/p>\n<p>He wasn&#8217;t a stereotype.<\/p>\n<p>He was a husband.<\/p>\n<p>Someone&#8217;s friend.<\/p>\n<p>Someone&#8217;s son.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who had been riding his motorcycle one ordinary afternoon and suddenly found himself fighting to stay alive.<\/p>\n<p>And for those few minutes beside him, none of those other things mattered.<\/p>\n<p>He needed a hand to hold.<\/p>\n<p>So I held it.<\/p>\n<p>He needed someone to keep talking to him.<\/p>\n<p>So I talked.<\/p>\n<p>He needed someone to remind him that his life mattered.<\/p>\n<p>So I reminded him.<\/p>\n<p>Before they loaded him into the ambulance, Joe reached for my hand.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thank you,&#8221; he whispered.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Go home to Linda.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ambulance doors closed.<\/p>\n<p>I stood there watching it disappear down the road.<\/p>\n<p>Later that evening, I found myself thinking about something.<\/p>\n<p>We spend so much time arguing about what separates us.<\/p>\n<p>Race.<\/p>\n<p>Religion.<\/p>\n<p>Politics.<\/p>\n<p>Money.<\/p>\n<p>Where we&#8217;re from.<\/p>\n<p>What we believe.<\/p>\n<p>Who we love.<\/p>\n<p>But when someone is lying injured on the side of the road, none of those things matter.<\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t ask for their r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t check their background.<\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t ask what they voted for.<\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t ask whether they&#8217;re &#8220;your kind of person.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You simply see a human being who needs help.<\/p>\n<p>And you help.<\/p>\n<p>I eventually learned that Joe survived the accident.<\/p>\n<p>He had a long road ahead of him, but he was alive.<\/p>\n<p>A few days later, I received a message from Linda.<\/p>\n<p>She thanked me for staying with her husband.<\/p>\n<p>Then she sent me a picture.<\/p>\n<p>It was Joe lying in his hospital bed, bruised and battered, holding up one finger with a weak smile.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath it, she had written:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;He says you still owe him those motorcycle pictures.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I laughed harder than I had in days.<\/p>\n<p>I sent her the photos.<\/p>\n<p>But I also sent Joe a message:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;You promised you&#8217;d tell the story yourself. I&#8217;m holding you to it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He replied:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Deal. But next time, let&#8217;s meet somewhere without an ambulance.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That conversation reminded me of something simple.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t get to choose who needs us.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t get to choose what they look like.<\/p>\n<p>And we shouldn&#8217;t have to.<\/p>\n<p>Because when somebody is hurting, humanity should come before everything else.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t save Joe because he looked like me.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t help him because I expected something in return.<\/p>\n<p>I helped him because he was a person.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Humanity is my race.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And love doesn&#8217;t need a boundary line.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; \u201cHumanity Is My Race\u201d Last week, I witnessed something I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ll ever forget.
