<\/p>\n
Every payday, my husband and I have a small tradition with our two teenagers.<\/p>\n

“I think you should understand it,” he said. “But I don’t think you should depend on only one thing for your future.”<\/p>\n
Our son looked confused.<\/p>\n
“Like what?”<\/p>\n
“Like retirement,” I said. “Or money. Or even a job.”<\/p>\n
I pointed at the paycheck.<\/p>\n
“This is one part of our financial life. But we also save.”<\/p>\n
We showed them our retirement contributions.<\/p>\n

Not with shame.<\/p>\n
But around a kitchen table.<\/p>\n
With a paycheck.<\/p>\n
A few honest questions.<\/p>\n
And parents willing to say:<\/p>\n
“We don’t know everything.<\/p>\n
But let’s learn together.”<\/p>\n
Because one day, our children will receive their own first paycheck.<\/p>\n
They’ll see taxes deducted.<\/p>\n
Insurance deducted.<\/p>\n
Retirement contributions deducted.<\/p>\n
Social Security deducted.<\/p>\n
And instead of blindly wondering where their money went…<\/p>\n
Maybe they’ll understand.<\/p>\n
And maybe they’ll remember one Friday night when they asked a simple question that made their parents stop talking…<\/p>\n
And start teaching.<\/p>\n
