It was worth around $920,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n They had lived there for more than thirty years. Dad had worked construction most of his life, and Mom had spent decades working at a hospital. They had sacrificed vacations, new cars, expensive restaurants, and plenty of other things so they could eventually own their home outright.<\/p>\n My brother and I had always assumed that house would eventually become part of our inheritance.<\/p>\n We never said it out loud.<\/p>\n At least, not seriously.<\/p>\n Then one evening, my parents invited both of us over for dinner.<\/p>\n After we finished eating, Dad cleared his throat.<\/p>\n “We’ve made a decision,” he said.<\/p>\n Mom reached across the table and held his hand.<\/p>\n “We’re taking out a reverse mortgage.”<\/p>\n For a few seconds, nobody said anything.<\/p>\n Then my brother laughed nervously.<\/p>\n “A reverse mortgage?
