<\/p>\n
My brother is only 32 years old, but something he did recently made me look at him differently.<\/p>\n
He owns a small business and employs a crew of hardworking people. Like most employers, he has deadlines, customers, bills, and responsibilities.<\/p>\n
But a few weeks ago, something happened that made all of that seem insignificant.<\/p>\n
One of the women on his crew lost her 8-month-old baby.<\/p>\n
There are no words that can truly describe a parent’s grief after losing a child.<\/p>\n
When my brother heard the news, he didn’t call her to ask when she’d be coming back to work.<\/p>\n
He didn’t mention deadlines.<\/p>\n
He didn’t ask whether she had enough vacation days.<\/p>\n
He simply told her:<\/p>\n
“Don’t worry about work. Stay home. Take whatever time you need. When you’re ready, we’ll sit down together and figure out a flexible schedule that works for you.”<\/p>\n
Then he hung up.<\/p>\n
But he wasn’t finished.<\/p>\n
He knew the loss didn’t affect only one person.<\/p>\n
It affected the entire crew.<\/p>\n
These people worked together every day. They weren’t just coworkers. They had become a little community.<\/p>\n
So my brother took everyone out for lunch.<\/p>\n
Not to celebrate anything.<\/p>\n
Not to discuss business.<\/p>\n
He chose a quiet place where they could sit together, mourn, and talk.<\/p>\n
He told them:<\/p>\n
“We’ve lost someone important to our work family. We need to give her space, but we also need to make sure she knows she’s not alone.”<\/p>\n
Then he asked everyone what they thought they could do to support her when she eventually returned.<\/p>\n
Some suggested helping with meals.<\/p>\n
Someone offered to cover some of her responsibilities.<\/p>\n
Another person said they could check in on her without overwhelming her.<\/p>\n
My brother listened to every suggestion.<\/p>\n
Then he said something I’ll never forget:<\/p>\n
“We don’t need to fix what happened. We can’t. But we can make sure she doesn’t have to carry everything by herself.”<\/p>\n
That sentence stayed with me.<\/p>\n
Because my brother isn’t some experienced CEO with decades of management behind him.<\/p>\n
He’s 32.<\/p>\n
He’s still figuring life out himself.<\/p>\n
Yet somehow, when one of his employees experienced the worst pain imaginable, his first instinct wasn’t productivity.<\/p>\n
It was compassion.<\/p>\n
He understood something many people in positions of authority never learn:<\/p>\n
People aren’t machines.<\/p>\n
An employee can be replaced.<\/p>\n
A deadline can be moved.<\/p>\n
A project can wait.<\/p>\n
But a grieving mother needs time, patience, and people who understand that she’s going through something that may change her forever.<\/p>\n
A few days later, my brother called her again.<\/p>\n
He didn’t ask, “When are you coming back?”<\/p>\n
He asked:<\/p>\n
“How are you holding up today?”<\/p>\n
She was quiet for a long time.<\/p>\n
Then she cried.<\/p>\n
My brother didn’t rush her.<\/p>\n
He just listened.<\/p>\n
Eventually, she told him she didn’t know when she’d be ready to return.<\/p>\n
He said:<\/p>\n
“That’s okay. You don’t have to know today.”<\/p>\n
When he told me about the conversation, I asked him why he’d gone so far out of his way for one employee.<\/p>\n
He looked at me like the answer was obvious.<\/p>\n
“Because she’s a person before she’s an employee.”<\/p>\n
I didn’t know what to say.<\/p>\n
I thought about how often people talk about leadership as if it’s about being tough, demanding, and getting results.<\/p>\n
But maybe real leadership looks different.<\/p>\n
Maybe leadership is knowing when to push\u2014and knowing when to simply stand beside someone.<\/p>\n
Maybe it’s understanding that compassion isn’t weakness.<\/p>\n
And maybe it’s treating people well even when you don’t have to.<\/p>\n
That night, I called my parents.<\/p>\n
I told them what my brother had done.<\/p>\n
There was silence on the other end of the phone.<\/p>\n
Then my mother said:<\/p>\n
“Your father and I must have done something right.”<\/p>\n
I laughed.<\/p>\n
But honestly?<\/p>\n
I think she’s right.<\/p>\n
My brother is only 32.<\/p>\n
He has plenty of things left to learn about running a business.<\/p>\n
But when life gave him an opportunity to show what kind of man he was, he chose kindness.<\/p>\n
And as his sibling, I couldn’t be prouder.<\/p>\n
Because businesses need good employers.<\/p>\n
But people need good humans.<\/p>\n
