When my 10-year-old son told me he wanted the S60 LEGO set, I looked up the price and smiled.<\/p>\n
It wasn’t cheap.<\/p>\n
“Okay,” I told him. “Save up half the money, and I’ll match whatever you save.”<\/p>\n
He stared at me for a second.<\/p>\n
Then he laughed.<\/p>\n
“Wait… you’re serious?”<\/p>\n
“Completely serious.”<\/p>\n
I honestly thought he would forget about it within a few days.<\/p>\n
Kids want things all the time. Usually, the excitement fades when they realize they actually have to work for them.<\/p>\n
But not him.<\/p>\n
The very next morning, I walked outside and found him sitting at the end of our driveway beside a cardboard sign.<\/p>\n
Written in crooked marker were the words:<\/p>\n
LEMONADE \u2013 50\u00a2<\/strong><\/p>\n It was already hot outside. Texas heat doesn’t play around, especially in the summer.<\/p>\n He sat there for six hours.<\/p>\n Six.<\/p>\n Hours.<\/p>\n At the end of the day, he came inside sweaty, tired, and exhausted.<\/p>\n I expected him to complain.<\/p>\n Instead, he emptied his little cup of coins onto the kitchen table.<\/p>\n Four dollars.<\/p>\n That’s all he made.<\/p>\n I looked at him and felt terrible.<\/p>\n “Sweetheart, you don’t have to do this,” I said. “You can try something else. Maybe I’ll just buy you the LEGO.”<\/p>\n He looked at me like I had said something ridiculous.<\/p>\n Then he shook his head.<\/p>\n “Mom, LEGO isn’t quitting.”<\/p>\n I couldn’t help but laugh.<\/p>\n But he wasn’t joking.<\/p>\n The next weekend, he was back outside.<\/p>\n Lemonade again.<\/p>\n Then he came up with another idea.<\/p>\n He loved drawing, so he made another sign:<\/p>\n PORTRAITS \u2013 $1<\/strong><\/p>\n Neighbors started stopping by.<\/p>\n Some wanted lemonade.<\/p>\n Some wanted their portraits drawn.<\/p>\n A few people probably gave him a dollar simply because they admired his determination.<\/p>\n Every weekend, for two months, he worked.<\/p>\n Sometimes he made only a few dollars.<\/p>\n Sometimes he came inside disappointed because hardly anyone stopped.<\/p>\n One weekend, it rained.<\/p>\n Another weekend, it was so hot I begged him to come inside early.<\/p>\n But every time I asked if he wanted to quit, his answer was the same.<\/p>\n “No. I’m getting closer.”<\/p>\n And little by little, he was.<\/p>\n He kept every coin.<\/p>\n Every wrinkled dollar bill.<\/p>\n Every fifty-cent piece.<\/p>\n He counted his money constantly.<\/p>\n $12.<\/p>\n $18.<\/p>\n $23.<\/p>\n $27.<\/p>\n Until one evening, he came running into the kitchen carrying a small container.<\/p>\n “Mom! Mom! I think I did it!”<\/p>\n We sat together at the kitchen table.<\/p>\n Coins rolled everywhere.<\/p>\n Pennies, nickels, quarters, crumpled dollar bills.<\/p>\n We counted everything twice.<\/p>\n When we finished, the total was:<\/p>\n $31.42<\/strong><\/p>\n He looked at me with the biggest smile I had ever seen.<\/p>\n “I saved half!”<\/p>\n I smiled and pulled out my wallet.<\/p>\n “Then it’s my turn.”<\/p>\n I matched every dollar.<\/p>\n The next day, we went to buy his LEGO set.<\/p>\n I expected him to be excited about finally getting it.<\/p>\n And he was.<\/p>\n But what surprised me was what he said as we walked out of the store carrying the box.<\/p>\n He hugged it tightly and whispered:<\/p>\n “I earned this.”<\/strong><\/p>\n That was three years ago.<\/p>\n He’s 13 now.<\/p>\n The LEGO set is still on a shelf in his room.<\/p>\n He’s gotten bigger sets since then.<\/p>\n More expensive things.<\/p>\n Things he didn’t have to spend two months earning.<\/p>\n But that old S60 LEGO set?<\/p>\n That’s still his favorite.<\/p>\n One day I asked him why.<\/p>\n He looked at me and said:<\/p>\n “Because that was my first big win.”<\/p>\n And that’s when I realized the LEGO was never the most valuable thing he got.<\/p>\n He learned something much bigger.<\/p>\n He learned that hard work feels different when the reward is something you earned yourself.<\/p>\n He learned that small amounts add up.<\/p>\n He learned that disappointment doesn’t mean failure.<\/p>\n And most importantly, he learned that sometimes the thing you want isn’t impossible.<\/p>\n You just have to keep going long enough to reach it.<\/p>\n I could have bought him that LEGO set on the first day.<\/p>\n It would have been easier.<\/p>\n But I don’t think he would still remember it three years later.<\/p>\n Sometimes the greatest gift we can give our children isn’t giving them everything they want.<\/p>\n Sometimes it’s giving them the chance to discover what they’re capable of earning.<\/p>\n And every time I see that little LEGO set on his shelf, I remember the sweaty 10-year-old sitting beside a cardboard lemonade sign in the Texas heat.<\/p>\n He only made four dollars that first day.<\/p>\n But he gained something worth much more.<\/p>\n He learned how to win.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" His First Big Win….
